Olympus's mid-range PEN — the E-P3 with fast AF and premium metal build for MFT.
The Olympus PEN E-P3 was released in 2011 as the premium model in Olympus's PEN Micro Four Thirds lineup. Featuring a 12.3MP Live MOS sensor with what Olympus claimed was the world's fastest contrast-detect AF at launch, it combined the classic PEN rangefinder-style design with modern digital capability. The metal body provided a premium feel.
Image quality from the 12.3MP sensor is good for the era. The AF system was genuinely fast for a contrast-detect mirrorless in 2011. In-body image stabilisation works with all MFT lenses. Art filters and creative modes add JPEG processing options. The OLED rear screen was vibrant. No built-in viewfinder — the optional VF-2 EVF attaches via the hot shoe.
Micro Four Thirds mount — full MFT lens compatibility. Weight is approximately 321 grams body only — compact. Build quality is premium with a metal body and top plate. The PEN design aesthetic is distinctive. Built-in flash. Touchscreen LCD for intuitive operation. WiFi not included — pre-WiFi era for most cameras.
Very affordable on the used market. Check sensor, AF accuracy, and touchscreen. Outdated by modern MFT standards but the metal build and PEN design remain appealing. The fast AF was a genuine advantage in 2011. Only worth considering at very low prices or for collectors of the PEN series.
