Rugged compact digital camera designed for outdoor and underwater use.
The Olympus Tough TG-1 (2012) was the flagship of the Olympus Tough rugged compact series — waterproof to 12m, shockproof to 2m, and freeze-proof to -10°C. It introduced an f/2.0 maximum aperture to the Tough series, then among the fastest available in rugged compacts, alongside a 4x optical zoom (25–100mm equivalent).
1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS, 12MP, 25-100mm equiv zoom (f/2.0–5.9), waterproof 12m, shockproof 2m, freeze-proof -10°C, GPS, compass, manometer, 1080p video. Fixed-lens compact — no interchangeable mount.
The f/2.0 wide-end aperture was a significant differentiator over competing rugged compacts at launch, enabling better low-light performance in underwater and adventure scenarios. GPS enables automatic geotagging. The TG-1 initiated a line of incremental successors (TG-2 through TG-7) that maintained the same core formula. All port covers must seal correctly for waterproofing to be effective.
Test waterproofing seals: check all port covers close and seal correctly; inspect gasket seats for debris or damage. Test GPS lock-on. Test all shooting modes including underwater white balance. Inspect lens barrel for impact damage. Test macro mode (requires dedicated macro lever on TG-1). Avoid pressurised water wash — gasket seals are rated for submersion depth, not jet pressure.
