The Olympus Tough TG-610 is a rugged waterproof compact unveiled in early 2011, positioned in the middle of the Tough range beneath the TG-810. In some markets it carried residual Stylus Tough branding, and it sold strongly as a family holiday camera.
It is waterproof to 5 metres, shockproof from 1.5 metres, freezeproof to -10C and dustproof, pairing a 14MP CCD sensor with a folded-path internal 5x 28-140mm equivalent zoom, sensor-shift stabilisation, a large 3-inch 920k-dot LCD and 720p HD video. Being CCD-based, it favours bright conditions and produces the slightly punchy colour typical of the breed.
The TG-610 is one of the most numerous Tough models on the UK second-hand market - it sold in volume through high-street chains, and survivors circulate constantly as cheap poolside and beach cameras. It is the value pick of the family: the later CMOS TG-620 beats it in dim light, but for sunny-holiday duty the difference rarely justifies the gap.
Inspect it as you would any veteran waterproof: pop both sealed doors and examine the O-rings for cracking or compression, scan battery and card contacts for the white or green fur of past water ingress, and check the double-lock latches still engage with a firm click. Photograph a plain wall to look for CCD artefacts (bright columns, blotches), confirm the internal zoom moves silently since grit in the mechanism is not serviceable at this price, and check the lens window and LCD for the deep scratches these cameras collect in beach bags.
