Olympus's long telephoto for the OM system — the 300mm f/4.5 for wildlife and sports.
The Olympus Zuiko 300mm f/4.5 is a long telephoto prime for the Olympus OM mount system. At 300mm f/4.5, it provides serious telephoto reach in the compact OM system. The f/4.5 aperture is adequate for the era's telephoto lenses. It was one of the longer focal lengths in the OM system, used for wildlife, sports, and nature photography.
Optical performance is good. Sharpness is very good when stopped down. The Zuiko multi-coating provides good contrast at this focal length. The 300mm reach was substantial for a manual focus system. The relatively compact OM system design kept the lens smaller than equivalent 300mm lenses from larger camera systems. Colour rendition is warm and pleasant.
Olympus OM mount, manual focus. Filter thread is 49mm — remarkably small for a 300mm lens, a testament to the compact OM system design. Weight is approximately 625 grams — impressively light for the focal length. Build quality is excellent with precision metal construction. A tripod collar may be present depending on the version.
Available on the used market at moderate prices. Check for smooth focus and clean optics. The compact 49mm filter thread and light weight are significant practical advantages. Adapts to mirrorless cameras — on MFT it becomes a 600mm f/4.5 equivalent, which is extraordinary. A well-regarded vintage telephoto in the OM system.
