Olympus's standard kit zoom for the original Four Thirds system — the 28-84mm equivalent ED zoom.
The Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 is the standard kit zoom for the original Four Thirds system, providing a 28-84mm equivalent range. Supplied with cameras like the E-410, E-420, E-510, and E-520, it offered basic wide-to-short-telephoto coverage for entry-level users. The ED designation indicates extra-low dispersion elements for improved colour correction.
Optical performance is adequate for a kit zoom. Centre sharpness is acceptable with improvement when stopped down. The ED element helps control chromatic aberration compared to non-ED kit alternatives. Variable aperture limits low-light performance. Suitable for learning photography and casual daytime shooting but not for demanding optical work.
Four Thirds mount — requires an MMF adapter for use on Micro Four Thirds bodies. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 190 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic. No weather sealing. No image stabilisation — relies on body IS on compatible Four Thirds and adapted Micro Four Thirds cameras.
Very cheap on the used market — often bundled free with Four Thirds camera purchases. Check for smooth zoom and AF operation. The native Micro Four Thirds 14-42mm is the better choice for MFT shooters. Only of interest bundled with a Four Thirds camera or as a very cheap standard zoom for adapted MFT use.
