Olympus's multi-coated 28mm wide-angle for the OM system, a compact and sharp vintage prime.
The Olympus Zuiko MC Auto-W 28mm f/2.8 is a manual focus wide-angle prime from Olympus's legendary OM system. The MC designation indicates multi-coating, an upgrade over the earlier single-coated version. It was one of the most popular wide-angle lenses in the OM lineup, prized for its compact size and good optical performance.
Sharpness is very good in the centre from f/2.8 and excellent across the frame by f/5.6. The multi-coating significantly reduces flare and ghosting compared to the earlier single-coated version. Distortion is well-controlled for a 28mm lens. Colour rendition has the warm, pleasant character typical of Zuiko lenses from this era.
Olympus OM mount, manual focus. Filter thread is 49mm. Weight is approximately 170 grams — remarkably compact and light, reflecting Olympus's design philosophy of the OM system. Build quality is excellent with smooth metal construction and a well-damped focus ring. Several optical versions exist with minor improvements over the production run.
Common on the used market and reasonably priced. Check for fungus, haze, and smooth focus ring action. The MC version commands a small premium over the single-coated variant. An excellent wide-angle for OM film shooters and adapts beautifully to mirrorless cameras, especially Micro Four Thirds where it becomes a 56mm equivalent.
