OM System's updated 34mm equivalent prime for MFT with improved coatings.
The OM System M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 II is an updated version of the Olympus 17mm f/1.8, released under the new OM System brand around 2023. Providing a 34mm equivalent perspective, it sits between the classic 28mm and 35mm focal lengths. The Mark II adds updated multi-coating for improved flare resistance.
Optical quality is good with sharp centre performance from f/2.2 and reasonable corners. The snap-focus mechanism inherited from the original allows instant switching to manual focus with a distance scale for zone focusing. Build is metal with a quality feel despite the compact size.
Micro Four Thirds mount only, 46mm filter thread. The original Olympus 17mm f/1.8 is optically very similar and often cheaper used. The 34mm equivalent perspective is slightly wider than a standard 35mm offering a more environmental view.
Moderate value used. The original Olympus version at a lower price is often the better buy. Check the snap-focus mechanism and updated coating by looking for the OM System branding. The difference from the original is subtle.
