OM System's updated 50mm equivalent prime for MFT — sharp, compact, and great for portraits on a budget.
The OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 25mm f/1.8 II was released in February 2025 as the updated version of the Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.8, adding IPX1 weather sealing (dust, splash, and freezeproof), ZERO Coating for flare resistance, and a metal lens barrel while retaining the same optical formula. The 50mm full-frame equivalent at f/1.8 covers street photography, documentary, and available-light portraiture on MFT. At 156g and 46mm filter thread it is compact for an f/1.8 standard prime.
The optical design uses 9 elements in 7 groups with 2 aspherical elements (unchanged from the original Olympus 25mm f/1.8). Seven aperture blades. The 46mm filter thread is the MFT compact prime standard. At 156g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.25m. MSC (Movie and Still Compatible) AF motor. IPX1 weather sealing. ZERO Coating. f/1.8 maximum aperture.
The primary upgrade from the original Olympus 25mm f/1.8 is IPX1 weather sealing and ZERO Coating — the optical formula is unchanged. IPX1 sealing enables outdoor shooting in light rain on compatible OM-D and OM System weather-sealed bodies. ZERO Coating reduces flare and ghosting versus the original's standard multi-coating. The 50mm equivalent provides the classic 'normal' focal length perspective for everyday MFT documentary shooting.
On the used market the OM System 25mm f/1.8 II is a February 2025 product with very limited used availability. Condition checks: MSC AF motor response, IPX1 weather sealing at barrel seams, 46mm front element for marks. The original Olympus 25mm f/1.8 provides the same optics without weather sealing at lower cost. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds bodies from Panasonic, Olympus, and OM System.
