Panasonic's 2010 travel-zoom compact — 14MP, 8x 28-224mm, 720p video; FH20 in the US
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS30 was a January 2010 compact that pushed the budget FS line into travel-zoom territory with an 8x lens, and was sold in North America as the Lumix DMC-FH20. Its sibling FS33 was likewise renamed FH22, and it sat above the shorter-zoom FS10 in that year's range.
Behind the 14-megapixel sensor sits an optically stabilised 8x zoom covering 28-224mm equivalent, extendable to about 473mm with Panasonic's Extra Optical Zoom crop mode. The Venus Engine IV processor drives Intelligent Auto, Quick AF and High Sensitivity modes up to ISO 6400, the LCD is 2.7in, and video records in 720p HD.
Its 28-224mm range makes it a flexible one-camera holiday choice for beginners, covering interiors through to distant detail without carrying anything else. Image quality is typical small-sensor CCD fare: pleasing in daylight, noisy indoors, so it suits casual shooters rather than low-light work.
Test the zoom through its whole travel — extension motors on long pocket lenses are a known wear point. Confirm the proprietary battery and charger are included and healthy, check the LCD and front lens element for marks, and remember FH20-badged US imports are the identical camera under another name.
