Panasonic's affordable MFT standard prime, the budget alternative to the Olympus 25mm f/1.8.
The Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. was released as the standard prime for Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds system — the most affordable native MFT normal prime with f/1.7 maximum aperture. On MFT it provides a 50mm full-frame equivalent perspective. At 125g and 46mm filter thread it is among the lightest and most compact MFT primes available, enabling a very portable normal-prime kit with any MFT body. The aspherical design controls distortion and spherical aberration through the aperture range.
The optical design uses 8 elements in 7 groups. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 46mm filter thread is the standard Panasonic compact prime size. At 125g the lens is very light. Minimum focus distance of 0.25m. The f/1.7 maximum aperture provides subject separation and low-light capability suited to indoor portraiture and available-light photography. No OIS — stabilisation relies on body IBIS. One aspherical element controls distortion through the aperture range.
The 50mm equivalent on MFT covers the classic normal perspective: the field of view at which foreground and background perspective appears natural and undistorted. At f/1.7 the lens provides subject isolation at portrait distances that the kit zoom's maximum aperture cannot match. The 125g weight and 46mm filter thread make it a practical travel prime that adds minimal size and weight to any MFT kit. No OIS means video stabilisation relies on the body's IBIS system.
On the used market the Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 is very affordable as the entry-level normal prime for MFT. Condition checks: aperture and focus ring operation (fully electronic drive), and front element for marks. The Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.8 provides a competing native MFT normal prime at a similar price. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds bodies from Panasonic, Olympus, and OM System.
