Panasonic's original super-telephoto for MFT — 200-600mm equiv with Mega OIS stabilisation.
The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4-5.6 Mega O.I.S. launched in 2010 as one of the first super-telephoto zooms for Micro Four Thirds, covering 200-600mm equivalent. The 2x crop factor makes this one of the lightest ways to achieve 600mm reach.
Optically acceptable — sharp in the centre at mid-focal lengths but softer at 300mm. Mega O.I.S. stabilisation is essential at these focal lengths. The variable f/4-5.6 aperture requires good light at the long end. Decent for casual wildlife and bird watching.
Micro Four Thirds mount with 67mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 520g — remarkably light for 600mm equiv. No weather sealing on the original — the Mark II added splash and dust resistance. Minimum focus distance 150cm.
Available used at budget to mid-range prices. The Mark II improved coatings and added weather resistance — preferred for outdoor use. The Olympus 75-300mm II offers similar range. A practical entry to super-telephoto photography on the lightweight MFT system.
