Panasonic's versatile MFT kit zoom with extended range and built-in stabilisation.
The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. Power O.I.S. is a versatile standard-to-telephoto zoom for Micro Four Thirds, covering a 24-120mm equivalent range. Introduced in 2016 and frequently bundled with Lumix G-series bodies including the G80 and G90, it offers substantially more reach than the standard 12-32mm kit zooms while remaining compact and lightweight. Built-in Power O.I.S. with Dual I.S. 2 compatibility makes it the most practical single-lens option for travel in the Panasonic MFT system. It is distinct from — and should not be confused with — the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0, which is a substantially more capable lens at a higher price.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherical elements and one ED element. The 58mm filter thread is less common in MFT kits than the smaller sizes on typical kit lenses — most existing filters will require a step-up ring. At approximately 210g the lens is light for all-day carry without matching the compactness of the smaller 14-42mm kit zoom. A minimum focus distance of 0.20m at the wide end is unusually close for a standard zoom, enabling macro-style environmental framing that most kit alternatives cannot match. Power O.I.S. provides built-in stabilisation; a firmware update (v1.1) adds 5-axis Dual I.S. 2 compatibility with compatible Panasonic bodies such as the G80, G90, and G9, combining lens and body stabilisation cooperatively. Build is lightweight plastic with no weather sealing. Variable aperture runs from f/3.5 at 12mm to f/5.6 at 60mm.
For travel and everyday photography the 24-120mm range covers landscapes at the wide end and moderate telephoto work at 60mm, replacing two lenses in a compact package. Power O.I.S. provides effective stabilisation for stills; on Dual I.S. 2 compatible bodies the cooperative stabilisation delivers additional smoothness for video. Centre sharpness is good for a consumer zoom across most of the range. At 12mm wide, distortion is managed by the aspherical elements and in-camera correction on Lumix bodies. The 0.20m close focus at 12mm enables useful near-subject shooting. Autofocus is fast and quiet for everyday use.
On the used market the 12-60mm Power O.I.S. is a practical and affordable choice for Lumix G system users. Condition checks should cover Power O.I.S. operation, zoom ring smoothness, and AF response. The Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 is a completely different lens — faster aperture, weather sealing, and superior optical performance at a higher price. The Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO is another upgrade path, better optically but shorter at the telephoto end. For travel requiring a single compact zoom the Panasonic 12-60mm is a strong budget-tier option.
