Panasonic's original MFT kit zoom — the standard 28-84mm equiv bundled with early Lumix G-series cameras.
The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega OIS Version II (H-FS1442A) is the compact kit zoom bundled with most Panasonic MFT bodies from 2012 onward, covering 28-84mm equivalent on Micro Four Thirds. Nine elements in 8 groups. Seven aperture blades. 46mm filter thread. At 110g. Mega OIS. 0.20m MFD (wide end).
Version II optical design: 9 elements in 8 groups (2 aspherical elements). Seven aperture blades. The 46mm filter thread. At 110g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.20m (14-20mm range) / 0.30m (21-42mm range). Mega OIS. Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 14mm to f/5.6 at 42mm. MFT image circle (28-84mm equivalent).
The Version II (H-FS1442A) is the standard 14-42mm kit lens from 2012: significantly more compact and lighter than the Version I (H-FS014042, 165g, 52mm thread), making it practical as a daily-carry MFT kit. Note that the original Version I uses a 52mm filter thread (different filter kit needed). The Version X (H-PS14042) is the motorised power zoom variant with a different profile suited to video.
On the used market the Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Version II is very affordable as a compact MFT kit zoom. Condition checks: AF response, 46mm front element for marks, zoom ring smoothness. Confirm Version II (H-FS1442A, 46mm thread, 110g) versus Version I (H-FS014042, 52mm thread, 165g). Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds bodies.
