Panasonic's original MFT kit zoom — the standard 28-84mm equiv bundled with early Lumix G-series cameras.
The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. Mega O.I.S. is the original standard kit zoom for the Micro Four Thirds system, launched in 2009 alongside Panasonic's first G-series cameras. It covers 28-84mm equivalent with optical stabilisation.
Optical quality is adequate for a kit lens of its era — sharp enough in the centre but soft at edges. Mega O.I.S. stabilisation helps in low light. Aspherical elements help control distortion. The original version is slightly larger and heavier than the Mark II revision.
Micro Four Thirds mount with 52mm filter thread. Approximately 165g. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 30cm. The original version preceded the more compact Mark II. Adequate for beginners but quickly outgrown by enthusiasts.
Extremely common used and very cheap — often bundled free with cameras. The Mark II is smaller and lighter. The 12-32mm pancake and 14-42mm EZ are more compact alternatives. Check for smooth zoom action on older copies. A functional starter lens that served millions of MFT users.
