Panasonic's popular mid-range MFT body with 5-axis IBIS and 4K video.
The Panasonic Lumix G80 (sold as the G85 in North America) was released in September 2016 as Panasonic's mid-range MFT body combining 5-axis in-body image stabilisation, dust and splash resistance, and 4K video — the first accessible G-series body to include both IBIS and weather resistance simultaneously. The Dual IS 2 system cooperates with compatible Panasonic OIS lenses for combined stabilisation effectiveness beyond what IBIS alone provides. The 16MP sensor without optical low-pass filter is carried over from the G7.
The 16MP MFT CMOS sensor (no optical low-pass filter) pairs with the Venus Engine processor. Face and Eye detection AF provides reliable portrait tracking. Burst shooting runs at 9fps with AFS and 6fps with AFC. 4K video records at up to 30fps. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at up to 5 stops standalone, extending further with compatible Dual IS 2 lenses. Dust and splash resistance is built in. Battery life approximately 330 shots using the DMW-BLC12, body weight approximately 505g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The G80's practical combination is IBIS plus weather sealing at mid-range MFT pricing — capabilities that previously required stepping up to the GH5 or G9 in Panasonic's lineup. The 5-axis IBIS is particularly useful for handheld video stabilisation, providing smooth footage without a gimbal in moderate conditions. Weather sealing makes the G80 suitable for outdoor photography in light rain and dusty environments. 4K/30fps and 9fps burst cover most practical stills and casual video needs. Dual IS 2 cooperation with compatible Panasonic lenses extends stabilisation effectiveness.
On the used market the G80/G85 is competitively priced as a capable mid-range MFT body. Condition checks: IBIS operation, weather sealing at the body seams and button surrounds, and DMW-BLC12 battery health. The Panasonic G9 provides significantly better burst rates and more advanced stabilisation at higher prices. The DMW-BLC12 battery is shared with the G7 and several other Panasonic MFT bodies — spares are widely available. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, and OM System.
