Panasonic's flagship MFT stills camera with 20fps burst and industry-leading 6.5-stop IBIS.
The Panasonic Lumix G9 launched in 2017 as Panasonic's stills-focused flagship for Micro Four Thirds, complementing the video-oriented GH5. With a 20.3MP sensor, 20fps burst with continuous AF, and industry-leading IBIS rated at 6.5 stops, it set new standards for MFT performance.
Key features include 20fps burst with AFC or 60fps with AFS, 6.5-stop IBIS, 225-point DFD contrast AF, a large 3.68M-dot OLED viewfinder, dual SD card slots, and a high-resolution mode producing 80MP images from a tripod. The body is fully weather-sealed with a magnesium alloy chassis.
The G9 is praised for exceptional burst speed, outstanding IBIS, and the best EVF in MFT at its release. It is criticised for the contrast-detect only AF which lacks the reliability of phase-detect for erratic subjects, and the MFT sensor limitations at high ISO compared to full-frame competitors.
Good value used as the G9 II has succeeded it. Check IBIS operation, both card slots, and the shutter mechanism. The G9 remains an extremely capable stills camera for MFT. The G9 II adds phase-detect AF which addresses the original's main weakness.
