Panasonic's flagship MFT stills camera with 20fps burst and industry-leading 6.5-stop IBIS.
The Panasonic Lumix G9 was introduced in late 2017 and released in early 2018 as Panasonic's professional MFT stills-focused body, positioned alongside the video-oriented GH5. It brought Panasonic's most advanced sensor stabilisation to a compact MFT form factor, with 6.5-stop IBIS when used with compatible Dual IS 2 lenses. The combination of fast burst rates, comprehensive AF, and professional control layout made it the primary reference body for MFT photographers prioritising still photography over video.
The 20.3MP MFT CMOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine processor. Burst shooting runs at 20fps with AF Single and 9fps with AF Continuous — among the highest sustained rates in the MFT category. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at up to 6.5 stops with compatible Dual IS 2 lenses, cooperating with the lens OIS system for enhanced combined stabilisation. 4K video records at up to 60fps. Battery life is rated on the DMW-BLF19 battery. At approximately 658g with battery the body is substantial for MFT but appropriate for professional use. Dual SD/SDHC/SDXC slots (UHS-II) handle backup and overflow. Weather sealing resists splashes and dust.
The G9's practical strengths are its burst capability and IBIS system. At 20fps with AFS the body covers birds-in-flight and wildlife subjects reliably at frame rates uncommon in MFT at launch. The 6.5-stop Dual IS 2 cooperation with compatible lenses produces handheld stability that extends stills usefulness in low light beyond most mirrorless alternatives of its era. The professional control layout — with two top-plate dials, an AF joystick, and direct access buttons — provides fast customisation for working photographers. 4K/60fps video is capable for a secondary video use case.
On the used market the G9 is a well-regarded professional MFT stills body at competitive prices. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both SD card slots, weather sealing at the mount and body, and the AF joystick for responsive operation. The Panasonic G9 II (2023) added phase-detect AF and updated video specs; the original G9 remains capable for stills-focused use. Compatible with all MFT lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, OM System, and Leica DG.
