Panasonic's ultra-wide starting kit zoom for L-Mount, covering 20-60mm.
The Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 was released in 2020 as the affordable standard zoom bundled with the Lumix S5 at launch, positioned as a compact and light entry into L-Mount full-frame photography. Its defining characteristic is the 0.15m minimum focus distance at the 20mm end — enabling near-macro close-up work that standard zooms typically cannot achieve, particularly useful for food and documentary photography. The 20mm starting focal length provides a slightly wider perspective than the 24mm of most standard kit zooms.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 9 groups, including two aspherical, three ED, and one UHR element for aberration control. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The 67mm filter thread is shared with several L-Mount telephoto lenses for filter carry-over. At 350g the lens is compact for a full-frame standard zoom — substantially lighter than Sigma and Panasonic S PRO alternatives. Minimum focus distance is 0.15m at 20mm and 0.40m at 60mm; the close-focus capability at the wide end is the standout specification. Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 20mm to f/5.6 at 60mm.
The S 20-60mm's practical strengths are the compact size and the close focus at the wide end. The 0.15m MFD at 20mm enables tabletop, food, and detail photography that would require a dedicated macro lens with other standard zooms. For S5 and S9 users who want a lightweight everyday zoom without the cost and weight of Sigma or Panasonic S PRO lenses, the 20-60mm provides a practical field combination. Variable aperture is the main quality trade-off versus constant f/4 alternatives at the telephoto end.
On the used market the S 20-60mm is widely available as the most common L-Mount standard kit zoom. Condition checks: AF motor response across the zoom range, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The 67mm filter thread is shared with several L-Mount telephoto lenses. The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary provides constant f/2.8 in a compact L-Mount package at higher cost; the Lumix S 20-60mm is the lighter and more affordable everyday option. Compatible with all L-Mount bodies from Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica.
