Panasonic's compact full-frame mirrorless with IBIS, targeting hybrid stills-video shooters.
The Panasonic Lumix S5 was announced in July 2020 and released in September 2020, positioned as the accessible full-frame L-Mount body below the S1 in Panasonic's lineup. It brought dual native ISO from the cinema-oriented S1H to a more compact and affordable body, alongside 4K/60fps recording and the V-Log L profile. The combination of dual native ISO, 6.5-stop IBIS, and full-frame imaging at a lower price than the S1 established the S5 as the reference value body in the L-Mount Alliance ecosystem at launch.
The 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine processor. Dual native ISO extends usable sensitivity by shifting the sensor's base sensitivity — reducing read noise at higher ISO settings compared to single-native-ISO designs. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at up to 6.5 stops with compatible Dual IS 2 lenses, cooperating with lens OIS for combined correction. 4K video records at up to 60fps (UHD) and 50fps (DCI). Burst shooting runs at 5fps with AE/AF continuous. Dual SD card slots (UHS-II) provide backup and overflow. Battery life approximately 440 shots using the DMW-BLK22, body weight approximately 714g with battery and card.
The S5's practical strengths are its low-light video and stills performance via dual native ISO and high-quality IBIS. For event photographers and videographers working in variable or low ambient light, dual native ISO provides cleaner high-ISO output without the progressive noise floor of a single-native-ISO sensor. The 6.5-stop IBIS with compatible lenses is among the most effective stabilisation in its category. 4K/60fps provides slow-motion capability at standard playback frame rates. The L-Mount system provides access to Sigma, Leica, and Panasonic native optics.
On the used market the S5 is well-regarded and widely available. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both SD card slot contacts, and weather sealing at the mount and body controls. The S5 II (2023) added phase-detect AF and improved video specs including Apple ProRes internal recording at a higher price; the S5's contrast-detect AF is the primary operational limitation versus the S5 II for subject tracking. The DMW-BLK22 battery is specific to the S5/S5 II generation — confirm battery health on any used purchase.
