Panasonic's ultra-compact full-frame mirrorless with phase-detect AF and content-creator focus.
The Panasonic Lumix S9 was announced in May 2024 as the most compact full-frame L-Mount camera at release, positioned for photographers and videographers who want full-frame imaging in a smaller form factor than the S5 or S5 II. It introduced phase-detect hybrid AF to the accessible end of the L-Mount lineup — a capability the original S5 and S5D lacked. V-Log and a Real Time LUT feature enable in-camera colour grading without external processing, aimed at solo creators who work without a full post-production pipeline. No weather sealing is provided.
The 24MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor incorporates on-sensor phase detection, providing 779 AF points for hybrid phase and contrast tracking. Electronic shutter burst runs at over 120fps for JPEG and over 55fps for RAW. 4K records at up to 60fps internally in 4:2:2 10-bit. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at approximately 5 stops standalone and up to 6.5 stops with compatible Dual IS lenses, cooperating with lens OIS. V-Log is available as a built-in profile; Real Time LUT applies colour grades directly in-camera. Body weight approximately 409g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The S9's practical combination is phase-detect AF, compact full-frame size, and video-production features in a 409g body. Phase-detect AF provides reliable tracking that the DFD contrast-based S5 and S5D cannot match for fast subjects. 4K/60p 4:2:2 10-bit internal is a strong video specification at this price tier. The Real Time LUT feature is practically significant for creators who deliver colour-graded footage directly from camera, avoiding dedicated grading sessions. The absence of weather sealing is the primary hardware limitation for outdoor use in variable conditions. L-Mount access covers Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica native optics.
The S9 is a 2024 product; used availability is limited. Condition checks: IBIS operation, card slot contacts, and screen for any marks. The S5 II provides weather sealing, dual SD slots, and a larger battery at a higher price — the principal upgrades for professional outdoor or extended-session use. The S5D at lower prices provides comparable sensor resolution with LiDAR-assisted AF rather than native phase detection. Compatible with all L-Mount lenses from Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica.
