Panasonic's travel zoom compact with Leica lens, 30x optical zoom, and 4K video.
The Panasonic Lumix TZ80 (sold as the ZS60 in North America) was released in 2017 as a compact travel zoom covering a 24-720mm equivalent range with a 30x optical zoom — providing reach from wide-angle through super-telephoto in a pocketable body. It was the first TZ/ZS-series model to include both a built-in electronic viewfinder and 4K video recording, addressing the EVF gap in Panasonic's previous travel zooms. RAW (RW2) capture provides post-processing flexibility beyond JPEG-only alternatives at this compact zoom form factor.
The 18MP 1/2.3-inch MOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine processor. The 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom covers 24-720mm equivalent at f/3.3-6.4 variable aperture. 4K video records at up to 25fps; 4K Photo mode enables single-frame extraction from 4K video sequences. The built-in 1,160k-dot EVF provides accurate framing in bright outdoor conditions where the rear LCD is difficult to see. RAW (RW2) files are supported for post-processing flexibility. Body weight approximately 282g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The TZ80's practical advances over previous TZ models are the built-in EVF and 4K recording in the same pocketable form factor. The EVF is useful in bright outdoor conditions where the LCD washes out. The 30x zoom range (24-720mm equivalent) covers the full travel photography spectrum from wide environmental shots through sports and wildlife subjects at 720mm equivalent. The 1/2.3-inch sensor produces adequate image quality in good daylight; at higher ISO settings and at the telephoto end the small sensor size limits dynamic range and noise performance compared to larger-sensor alternatives.
On the used market the TZ80/ZS60 is affordable. Condition checks: 30x zoom mechanism smoothness and lens barrel for any impact, EVF display for uniformity, and battery (DMW-BLG10) health. The Lumix TZ90 provides an updated 30x zoom with improved image quality. For travel photographers prioritising maximum reach in a pocket-sized body with both EVF and 4K in the 1/2.3-inch sensor category, the TZ80 covers that specification. Fixed lens; no interchangeable mount.
