Panasonic's compact travel zoom with 30x optical zoom, 4K video, and tilting screen.
The Panasonic Lumix TZ90 (sold as the ZS70 in North America) was released in April 2017 as a refined companion to the TZ80, featuring a higher-resolution 20.3MP BSI (back-side illuminated) CMOS sensor versus the TZ80's 18MP standard CMOS — providing moderately better image quality at higher ISO settings. Both models share the same 30x optical zoom (24-720mm equivalent) and built-in electronic viewfinder. The TZ90 adds a rear touchscreen with tilt capability for low-angle and self-facing framing that the TZ80 lacks.
The 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine processor. The 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmar zoom covers 24-720mm equivalent at f/3.3-6.4 variable aperture. 4K video records at up to 30fps; 4K Photo mode enables single-frame extraction from 4K sequences. The built-in 1,166k-dot EVF provides framing in bright outdoor conditions. RAW (RW2) capture is supported. The rear touchscreen enables touch-to-focus and touch-shutter operation. Body weight approximately 322g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The TZ90's practical improvements over the TZ80 are the higher-resolution BSI sensor and the touchscreen with tilt for low-angle and self-facing use. The 30x zoom range (24-720mm equivalent) remains the primary appeal: maximum reach in a pocketable body alongside an EVF for outdoor and bright-light use. The 1/2.3-inch sensor limits image quality at higher ISO and the long end of the zoom range, as with all ultra-compact sensor travel zooms in this format.
On the used market the TZ90/ZS70 is affordable. Condition checks: 30x zoom mechanism smoothness and lens barrel for impact, EVF display uniformity, touchscreen responsiveness, and DMW-BLG10 battery health. The Lumix TZ200/ZS200 provides a 1-inch sensor with a 15x zoom range for substantially better image quality at higher prices. For travel photographers prioritising maximum reach in a pocketable body with EVF and touchscreen, the TZ90 addresses that combination. Fixed lens; no interchangeable mount.
