Pentax's basic APS-C kit zoom — the entry-level 27-82mm equivalent standard zoom for K-mount bodies.
The Pentax 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL is the standard kit zoom supplied with entry-level and mid-range Pentax K-mount DSLRs. Covering a 27-82mm equivalent range, it provides the basic wide-to-short-telephoto coverage needed for general photography. Multiple versions exist across Pentax's DSLR history with incremental improvements.
Optical performance is typical of kit zooms — acceptable sharpness in the centre with softer corners, particularly at the wide end. Stopped down to f/8, results improve significantly. The AL (aspherical lens) element helps control distortion. Not designed for demanding optical work, but adequate for learning and casual shooting.
Pentax K mount, APS-C coverage. Filter thread is 52mm. Weight is approximately 220 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic. No weather sealing, unlike Pentax's higher-end WR kit zooms. No image stabilisation — relies on Pentax's in-body Shake Reduction system, which helps significantly at longer focal lengths.
Extremely common and cheap on the used market — often sold for under £20 as many buyers upgrade. Check for smooth zoom operation. The non-WR version offers no weather sealing protection. Perfectly adequate as a starter lens but Pentax shooters should look to the DA 18-135mm WR or DA 16-85mm for a meaningful upgrade.
