Pentax's digital medium format flagship — the 645Z with 51.4MP CMOS sensor.
The Pentax 645Z is a professional medium format DSLR from Pentax, introduced in 2014, using a 43.8x32.9mm (slightly larger than 35mm full-frame) CMOS sensor. It was the first medium format camera with weather sealing and the first to offer video capability in this class at its launch price.
The 645Z uses a 51.4-megapixel medium format CMOS sensor, Pentax 645D mount for the extensive 645D/Z lens lineup, weather sealing (rated to -10°C), 1080p Full HD video, ISO 100–204800, 3fps burst, and a 3.2-inch tilting rear LCD.
The 645Z's weather sealing and video capability were genuinely differentiated at its launch — Hasselblad and Phase One competitors offered neither at equivalent price points. The 51MP sensor on a 43.8x32.9mm format delivers higher pixel density than typical medium format backs while maintaining the larger sensor's tonal quality advantage.
Test weather sealing integrity and the tilting LCD mechanism. Verify 645D mount lens coupling with compatible Pentax 645 lenses. Check shutter count against rated lifespan. Test ISO performance at higher sensitivities. Test video recording.
