Pentax's compact manual-focus telephoto prime — lightweight 200mm f/4 with excellent build quality.
The Pentax Pentax-A 200mm f/4 is a manual-focus telephoto prime from the early 1980s for the Pentax K-mount system. The A-series designation means it supports aperture-priority and program auto exposure on Pentax bodies — a step up from the older M-series.
Optically good for its era — sharp from f/5.6 with acceptable performance at f/4. The 200mm focal length provides useful telephoto reach for portraits, candid photography, and casual wildlife. Simple optical design with limited coatings by modern standards.
Pentax K mount with 52mm filter thread. Lightweight at approximately 385g. Minimum focus distance 250cm. Manual focus only with a smooth, well-damped focusing ring. Metal and plastic construction. Aperture ring with half-stop clicks. Full-frame coverage.
Very cheap used. Compatible with modern Pentax DSLRs using the A-mode aperture setting. Also adapts easily to mirrorless cameras for manual-focus shooting. Check for haze and fungus — decades-old optics are susceptible. A pleasant manual telephoto for those who enjoy slow, deliberate shooting.
