Pentax's budget 35mm for APS-C — the affordable DA 35mm f/2.4 giving a 53mm equivalent.
The Pentax SMC DA 35mm f/2.4 AL was released in 2011 as Pentax's most affordable fast prime for K-mount APS-C cameras. Providing a 53mm equivalent normal perspective, it serves as a budget nifty fifty for Pentax shooters. The AL designation indicates an aspherical element for improved optical correction at the affordable price point.
Optical performance is good for the price. Sharpness is respectable from f/2.4 and very good by f/4. The aspherical element helps control aberrations. Bokeh is smooth with six aperture blades — not as refined as the premium DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited but adequate for casual shooting. A significant step up from kit zoom sharpness at a modest price.
Pentax K mount, APS-C (DA designation). Filter thread is 49mm. Weight is approximately 124 grams — extremely lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic — the most affordable Pentax prime. No weather sealing. Screw-drive AF using the body's AF motor. Benefits significantly from Pentax's in-body Shake Reduction stabilisation.
Very affordable on the used market. Check for smooth focus ring and clean optics. An excellent budget entry to prime lens photography for Pentax shooters. The DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited is the premium alternative with better build and optics. The f/2.4 aperture is slightly slower than typical f/1.8 fifties but still delivers meaningful shallow DOF.
