Pentax's thinnest lens — the DA 40mm f/2.8 XS pancake, barely thicker than a body cap.
The Pentax SMC DA 40mm f/2.8 XS holds a notable engineering distinction: at 9.2mm depth it is one of the world's thinnest interchangeable lenses, earning the XS (Extra Small) designation. Designed specifically for APS-C Pentax K-mount bodies, it provides a 60mm full-frame equivalent field of view.
The lens delivers 40mm (60mm equivalent on APS-C) at f/2.8 maximum aperture with SMC Super Multi-Coating, a DA APS-C-only image circle, Pentax K-mount screw-drive autofocus coupling, and an ultra-slim pancake profile. The entire optical and mechanical system is compressed into a barrel barely thicker than a body cap.
Paired with a Pentax K APS-C body, the XS creates one of the most genuinely compact DSLRs available — it effectively makes the camera as slim as some mirrorless bodies. The 60mm equivalent gives a moderate telephoto-normal perspective well-suited to street and documentary photography. Pentax in-body SR stabilisation applies regardless of the lens's own lack of IS.
Check screw-drive AF motor operation for speed and accuracy. Inspect the ultra-thin barrel carefully for dents or impact damage — the compact design is more vulnerable than deeper-barreled lenses. Verify mount security and confirm DA APS-C image circle is correct for the intended Pentax body. Check SMC coating condition.
