Pentax's Super-Takumar 35mm f/2 — a fast, well-regarded M42 wide-angle prime.
The Super-Takumar 35mm f/2 is a fast wide-angle prime made by Asahi Optical for the M42 screw mount in the mid-1960s. It belongs to the Super-Takumar generation, which brought fully automatic diaphragm operation and improved coatings to the Takumar line. It was the fast 35mm option in the Pentax Spotmatic-era system and a well-regarded wide-angle.
This is a manual-focus M42 screw-mount lens with a 35mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2. Focus is set by hand and the aperture uses the Super-Takumar automatic diaphragm. It is an all-metal prime of solid build. Precise optical construction figures are not asserted here beyond the verified focal length and aperture, in line with what can be reliably confirmed.
A fast 35mm gives a versatile moderate wide view for street, travel, landscape and reportage, and the f/2 aperture allows use in lower light and some subject separation. This lens is regarded as a strong performer, sharp across much of the frame when stopped down while retaining pleasant rendering wide open, making it a favourite classic wide among Takumar users.
Used copies are moderately priced and sought after for adapting to mirrorless. Check for haze and fungus, ensure the automatic diaphragm snaps closed cleanly and the blades are oil-free, and confirm smooth focus. Some Takumars of this era use thoriated glass that can yellow over time; inspect for a tint if colour accuracy matters. An M42 adapter mounts it on modern cameras.
