The Pentax WG-8 is the latest generation of Pentax's long-running WG rugged compact series, designed for outdoor, underwater, and adventure use. The WG line has been Pentax's primary entry in the rugged compact segment for over a decade, competing with the Olympus Tough and Nikon Coolpix W series.

The WG-8 is rated waterproof to 14 metres, dustproof, shockproof from drops to 2.1 metres, and freezeproof to -10°C. It uses a 16-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, captures 4K video, and includes a built-in macro ring illuminator comprising six LED lights around the lens for close-up photography in dark environments.
