Praktica — 70-210mm f/4-5.6 manual zoom for M42/Praktica B, made by Samyang/Sigma
Praktica sold this 70-210mm zoom under its Prakticar branding for the Praktica B (PB) bayonet system introduced in 1979, sourced from external optical houses rather than built in-house. A Samyang-made version, also fitted for M42-mount Praktica bodies, followed in the early 1990s, alongside a separate Sigma-built PB-only edition.
The Samyang edition uses a 12-element, 10-group formula with a 22-blade iris, unusual for a consumer zoom and a byproduct of its multi-mount design. It focuses to 1.5m throughout the range, takes 52mm filters, and offers manual focus and aperture with no electronic coupling to the body.
Wide open the lens softens at 210mm and vignettes on full-frame bodies, but stopped to f/8 it resolves acceptably for prints and web use. The high blade count gives smoother out-of-focus backgrounds than most rivals in this price bracket, a rare strength for a budget-era zoom.
Praktica-branded zooms circulate cheaply on the UK used market as an inexpensive way into PB or M42 mounts. Check the zoom and focus rings for grease migration onto the aperture blades, confirm the iris closes cleanly at all stops, and inspect the rear element for haze.
