Premier's mid-2000s budget digicam — 5.0MP, fixed f/3.3 lens, 1.5in LCD, SD storage, Li-ion battery
The Premier DS-5080 was a 5-megapixel budget compact from Premier Image Technology, the Taiwanese manufacturer that built digital cameras both under its own Premier badge and as an OEM for bigger brands. It was sold through UK budget and catalogue retail in the mid-2000s, part of the DS series that also included 3-megapixel models such as the DS-3080.
It offers a 5.0-megapixel sensor with a fixed (non-zoom) lens quoted at f/3.3 maximum aperture, a 1.5-inch LCD for framing and playback, a built-in flash and autofocus rather than the focus-free arrangement of cheaper rivals. Catalogue data lists a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, SD card storage, USB connectivity, a movie mode, self-timer and audio recording. Documentation is sparse, so figures beyond these should be treated cautiously.
As a step-up budget camera it delivers usable daylight snapshots with more resolution than most supermarket digicams of its day, but its plain lens and small screen keep expectations modest. Today it appeals mainly to collectors of obscure OEM digicams and to shooters after mid-2000s digital rendering at minimal cost.
The proprietary lithium-ion battery is the main used-market concern: many examples surface without a charger, and replacements are harder to source than AA-powered rivals, so favour listings that include battery, charger and lead. Otherwise confirm it powers on, writes to a small SD card, and that the LCD and flash work. Untested examples should be priced as spares.
