Prinz — budget Japanese preset wide-angle lens, Dixons own-brand, T2/M42/Pentax K fit

The Galaxy 35mm f/3.5 was the wide-angle entry in Dixons' Prinz-branded lens range, sold from the 1970s alongside longer preset telephotos. Optically it is close to identical to lenses badged Optomax, Kyoei and Hanimex, sharing a Japanese-made design common to several period own-brand importers.

Construction is a preset-aperture design on a T2 base, most often fitted with an M42 screw adapter, with Pentax K bayonet versions also sold. The front element measures 23mm across behind a 46mm filter thread, with coatings showing a bluish-violet tint. Aperture presets from f/3.5 down via two front rings.

Ultraviolet testing rates the lens well for that niche, comparable to the related Soligor version, though for ordinary colour work rendering is unremarkable, with softness wide open and moderate contrast typical of budget construction. The formula is shared closely enough with rival brands to count as a clone.

These lenses are inexpensive secondhand, generally under £30, most often in M42 fit with caps included. Check the preset ring moves smoothly, confirm the front element is free of scratches given its exposed wide-angle position, and verify any bayonet adapter locks securely.
