8K full-frame Monstro sensor in the DSMC2 body — RED's VistaVision flagship of its era.
The RED DSMC2 Monstro 8K VV, announced in 2017, was the flagship of the DSMC2 line, replacing the Weapon 8K VV brain. The Monstro sensor also carried into the Ranger Monstro and remained RED's top large-format sensor until the V-Raptor arrived in 2021.
35.4MP 8K full-frame VV (40.96x21.6mm) CMOS sensor, REDCODE RAW at up to 60fps in 8K full format with simultaneous ProRes or DNx recording, claimed 17 stops of dynamic range, RED MINI-MAG SSD media, interchangeable EF or PL mounts, brain weight around 1.59kg.
Full-frame 8K capture gives the large-format field of view and shallow depth of field associated with VistaVision, and Monstro bodies were common on high-end drama and commercial productions, so the used pool is largely ex-rental.
Check the hour counter, sensor and OLPF condition, and that the advertised mount, media and power accessories are actually included, as complete packages vary widely. The DSMC2 Gemini or Helium are cheaper S35 options; the V-Raptor 8K VV is the newer equivalent.
