Ricoh's well-regarded pocket camera — APS-C sensor, fixed 28mm f/2.8 GR lens, 3-axis sensor stabilisation.

The Ricoh GR III was released in March 2019 as the third-generation compact APS-C fixed-lens camera, updating the GR II with a 24.24MP sensor, a revised 28mm f/2.8 optical formula, in-body SR (Shake Reduction) stabilisation, and a touchscreen. At 257g it remains the most compact APS-C camera available with a 28mm-equivalent perspective. Approximately 2GB of internal storage is built in alongside the SD card slot. No optical or electronic viewfinder is included.

The 24.24MP APS-C CMOS sensor uses a 6-element/4-group 18.3mm f/2.8 lens (28mm full-frame equivalent). 3-axis sensor-shift SR IBIS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. Burst shooting runs at 4fps. No video beyond basic movie capability. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in. Battery life approximately 200 shots using the DB-110, body weight approximately 257g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot plus approximately 2GB internal memory.

The GR III's APS-C sensor in a 257g pocketable body is its defining proposition: the combination of a large sensor with a fast fixed wide-angle lens and coat-pocket portability that no interchangeable-lens system can match. For street photography, available-light documentary, and travel where a camera must be genuinely pocketable, the GR III provides imaging quality that compact 1-inch sensor cameras cannot achieve. The SR IBIS is a meaningful addition over the GR II for slow-shutter work.

On the used market the GR III is available at premium compact pricing, well below its launch cost. Condition checks: SR IBIS operation, DB-110 battery health — specific to the GR III, DB-65, and GR IIIx — front element for marks (no filter thread on standard version; a ring accessory is optional), and touchscreen for any marks. The Ricoh GR IIIx provides a 40mm f/2.5 equivalent lens for a portrait-friendlier perspective. Fixed lens; no interchangeable mount.
