Ricoh's diffusion-filtered compact — the GR IIIx HDF with built-in highlight diffusion.
The Ricoh GR IIIx HDF is a special edition variant of the Ricoh GR IIIx, featuring a Hard Digital Filter (HDF) coating on the front element that produces softer, more diffused rendering compared to the standard sharp GR IIIx optic. It targets photographers who want a film-like or pictorialist aesthetic from a digital compact.
The GR IIIx HDF shares the same APS-C 24-megapixel sensor, 40mm equivalent f/2.8 fixed lens, in-body stabilisation, and compact dimensions as the standard GR IIIx, with the HDF front element coating as the sole functional difference. RAW capture, full manual controls, and the GR series' snap focus functionality are all retained.
The HDF coating applies a distinctive soft-focus characteristic that is inherent to the optic rather than achieved in post-processing — it cannot be turned off in camera, making this edition specifically suited to photographers committed to the HDF aesthetic. The GR series remains one of the only fixed-lens APS-C compact cameras available, and the IIIx's 40mm equivalent is an ideal street photography focal length.
Test snap focus accuracy at 1m, 2m, and infinity — the GR's snap focus is a defining operational feature for street use. Verify the HDF rendering effect is visible and as expected. Check in-body stabilisation effectiveness. Inspect the fixed front element for coating damage. Confirm RAW capture works correctly.
