Ricoh's original premium compact — the GR1 that launched the GR legend.
The Ricoh GR1, introduced in 1996, is a premium ultra-compact 35mm film camera with a fixed 28mm f/2.8 GR Rikenon lens. Designed for professional and advanced photographers who needed a pocketable camera of exceptional optical quality, it became an enduring favourite among street and travel photographers and established the GR line that continues today.
Fixed 28mm f/2.8 GR Rikenon lens, aperture-priority and programmed auto exposure, 1/500s maximum shutter speed, snap-focus mode (preset 2.5m), titanium-alloy body, DX-coded film loading.
The GR1's lens is optically outstanding for a compact — sharp from f/2.8 with excellent corner performance and minimal distortion at 28mm. The snap-focus mode sets a fixed 2.5m focus distance for rapid street capture without autofocus delay. The titanium body is robust and compact enough for a shirt pocket. Preceded the GR1s and GR1v, which added minor upgrades.
Test all functions including snap-focus mode and program/aperture-priority modes. Inspect viewfinder and lens for haze or marks. Check battery contacts and door seal. Light seals deteriorate with age — verify for light leaks. The 28mm focal length makes the GR1 harder to use in very tight spaces.
