Vintage Ricoh 35mm SLR camera body bundled with a 55mm f/1.4 prime lens.
The Ricoh TLS401 (1972) is an M42 screw-mount 35mm SLR from Ricoh's TLS series. Ricoh produced a sustained range of M42-compatible SLRs through the 1960s–70s as M42 was the dominant thread-mount standard. The TLS designation indicates through-the-lens metering with stop-down operation. The bundled 55mm f/1.4 is a Rikenon standard prime.
35mm SLR, M42 screw mount, stop-down TTL metering, top shutter speed typically 1/500s, focal plane shutter. Bundled Rikenon 55mm f/1.4: fast standard prime, multiple elements, M42 thread, manual focus.
The Rikenon 55mm f/1.4 is an underappreciated fast standard lens — full-frame capable, M42 threaded, adaptable via M42 adapter to virtually any modern mirrorless system. Stop-down metering on the TLS401 requires closing the aperture to its taking value before metering — less convenient than open-aperture metering systems. The Ricoh-Sears OEM relationship means some TLS401 equivalents appear under the Sears brand.
Check stop-down metering lever operation. Test shutter at all speeds including slow speeds for accuracy. Load film to verify advance mechanism. On the Rikenon 55mm f/1.4, check for aperture blade oil contamination (fast lenses of this era frequently require cleaning). Inspect M42 thread condition on both body and lens.
