Rollei's SL66 portrait telephoto — Zeiss Sonnar 150mm f/4, 5 elements in 3 groups, close focus via body bellows
The 150mm f/4 Sonnar was the short telephoto of the Rolleiflex SL66 6x6 system, produced from October 1966 into the 1990s. It followed the standard SL66 generation sequence: Carl Zeiss Oberkochen single- or double-coated lenses until 1974, HFT multicoated versions from 1972, production moving to Rollei ('Made by Rollei') in 1974, and open-aperture-metering versions from 1982 for the SL66E/SE. From January 1970 Rollei also sold a separate 150mm f/4 Sonnar with a built-in leaf shutter for 1/500 flash sync — that leaf-shutter lens is a distinct product, while this master covers the standard shutterless lens.
The design is a classic Sonnar with 5 elements in 3 groups, an aperture range of f/4 to f/32, a Bay VI filter mount and a weight of roughly 545g. Because the SL66 body provides both the focal-plane shutter and bellows focusing, the lens itself carries only an aperture ring with a fully automatic diaphragm. Minimum focus with the standard bellows is around 0.6m, unusually close for a medium-format telephoto of its day.
On 6x6 the 150mm frames like a short telephoto in the 80-85mm class on 35mm film, and it was the system's portrait lens, also useful for tighter landscape and detail work. The simple cemented Sonnar construction keeps flare well controlled even in the pre-HFT single-coated versions, and the SL66's bellows lets it focus far closer than helicoid-based rivals.
Used examples should be checked for fungus, haze and — particularly with the cemented Sonnar groups — edge separation, which shows as a rainbow or silvered ring. Confirm the automatic diaphragm snaps closed without oil on the blades and the aperture ring clicks cleanly. There is no focusing helicoid to assess; focus feel belongs to the camera body. If offered the leaf-shutter version instead, its shutter must be cocked manually per shot and all speeds need testing — check listings carefully since sellers often mix the two up. Earlier lenses need an E-ring for SL66E/SE open-aperture metering.
