Samsung's budget 4MP compact — 1/2.7in CCD, 3x zoom, SD/MMC, AA power; 2005 Digimax A-series entry point.
The Samsung Digimax A4 was a budget point-and-shoot in Samsung Techwin's Digimax A-series, announced in April 2005. It sat near the bottom of the range, below the 5-megapixel A50 and 6-megapixel A6, and was aimed at first-time digital camera buyers wanting simple automatic operation at a low price.
It used a 4-megapixel 1/2.7in CCD sensor paired with a 3x optical zoom lens (5.8-17.4mm) plus 4x digital zoom. Framing and playback were handled on a 1.8in LCD. Around 16MB of internal memory was built in, expandable via SD or MMC cards. Power came from two AA cells or a CR-V3 lithium battery, and it recorded motion-JPEG AVI movie clips alongside voice memos and up to an hour of voice recording.
This is a basic snapshot camera: automatic exposure, modest zoom reach and a small screen. Its appeal today is largely as a cheap CCD-era digicam for casual, lo-fi shooting, and the AA power supply makes it easy to keep running without hunting for discontinued battery packs.
On the used market these sell cheaply and often without accessories. AA power removes charger worries, but check the battery contacts for corrosion, confirm the SD/MMC slot reads cards (capacities are limited to small cards), and inspect the small LCD for bleed or scratches. Test the zoom motor and flash charge before paying more than parts money.
