Samsung's 2009 budget compact — 10.2MP CCD, 3x 35-105mm zoom and 2.5in LCD, sold as SL102 in the US
The Samsung ES55 was a budget point-and-shoot introduced in January 2009, sold in North America as the Samsung SL102. It sat in the value-focused ES series below Samsung's style-led NV and touchscreen ST lines, offered in black, silver and pink, and was widely sold as a first digital camera.
It carries a 10.2-megapixel 1/2.33in CCD and a 3x zoom covering a 35-105mm equivalent range, with framing on a 2.5in 230,000-dot LCD. Sensitivity spans ISO 80-1600, stabilisation is digital rather than optical, and movies record at 640x480 and 30fps. Images go to SD/SDHC cards, and power comes from Samsung's rechargeable SLB-10A lithium-ion battery rather than AAs.
The ES55 is a straightforward pocket camera for casual snapshots and for buyers chasing late-2000s CCD colour on a small budget. Its face-detection auto modes keep operation simple, though the lack of optical stabilisation and the ordinary lens mean it rewards good light more than ambition.
The SLB-10A battery was shared across many Samsung compacts, so replacements and chargers remain easy to find cheaply, but confirm the seller includes at least one working cell and a way to charge it. Check the LCD for scratches, verify the zoom and flash operate, and test a photo to rule out CCD defects such as banding or colour cast.
