Samsung's 2View budget compact — 12.2MP CCD, 3x 35-105mm zoom and a 1.5in front LCD for selfies (US: TL205)
The Samsung PL100 was the budget entry in Samsung's 2View range of dual-screen compacts, announced in January 2010 alongside the higher-specified PL150. In North America the same camera was sold as the Samsung TL205. Its defining feature was a small second LCD on the front, aimed at the self-portrait trend that predated front-facing phone cameras.
It paired a 12.2-megapixel 1/2.3in CCD with a 3x zoom covering a 35-105mm equivalent range; the lens was not optically stabilised, so the camera relied on digital stabilisation. The rear carried a 2.7in 230,000-dot LCD, while the 1.5in front display helped frame self-portraits. Sensitivity ran from ISO 80 to 3200 and movies were recorded at VGA resolution.
The PL100 suits casual shooters and collectors of the brief dual-screen compact era rather than anyone chasing image quality. The front LCD makes it an easy conversation piece, and the CCD output has the colour character now sought by digicam enthusiasts, but the unstabilised lens limits telephoto and low-light results.
On the used market, confirm the proprietary rechargeable battery holds charge and that a charger or USB charging lead is included, as spares are third-party only. Test both LCDs, since a dead front screen removes the camera's main selling point, and confirm a compatible memory card is supplied and recognised before relying on it.
