Samsung's 16.1MP PL-series compact — 10x 27-270mm equiv zoom f/3.3-5.9, OIS, 3in LCD, early 2010s.
The PL221 was a compact travel-zoom style camera in Samsung's PL series of budget point-and-shoots, sold in the early 2010s towards the end of Samsung's dedicated compact-camera era. It sat above the basic 5x-zoom PL models such as the PL120 and PL210 thanks to a longer 10x lens, and was offered in several body colours including red and black through UK retail.
Samsung's own manual specifies a 1/2.3-inch CCD with approximately 16.1 effective megapixels, a Samsung 10x zoom of 4.85-48.5mm (27-270mm equivalent) at f/3.3-5.9, and a 3.0-inch 230,000-dot TFT LCD. It offered TTL autofocus with multi, centre, face-detection and object-tracking modes, ISO 80-3200, multi/spot/centre-weighted metering with +/-2EV compensation, shutter speeds to 1/2000s, optical image stabilisation with a Dual IS mode, 720p-class video with continuous AF, and a rechargeable battery charged in-camera over USB.
With a genuine 27-270mm equivalent range in a pocketable body, the PL221 works as a cheap all-in-one holiday camera for someone wanting more reach than a basic compact, and its OIS helps at the long end. It remains a fully automatic camera with scene modes rather than manual exposure, so it is not suited to buyers wanting creative control.
Used examples should be checked for a working battery and the USB charging lead, since the battery charges in-camera and boxed chargers are often missing. Run the 10x zoom through its full travel listening for motor strain, verify OIS switches on without error, and inspect the 3-inch screen for scratches, as it dominates the back of the camera. Confirm the memory card type in the slot before buying a card, as boxed accessories are rarely included.
