Samsung — slim 14MP compact superzoom with 18x Schneider-Kreuznach zoom (24-432mm), 2011
The Samsung WB700 is a slim-bodied superzoom compact Samsung released in 2011, aimed at travellers wanting long reach without the bulk of a bridge camera. It sits within Samsung's push into pocketable long-zoom compacts alongside the WB600 and WB210.
It uses a 1/2.33-inch CCD sensor rated at approximately 14.2 effective megapixels behind a Schneider-Kreuznach lens covering 24-432mm equivalent (18x zoom, f/3.2-5.8). The 3-inch QVGA LCD is the only means of composing shots, storage is SD/SDHC, video tops out at 1280x720, and an HDMI port allows TV playback.
Fitting an 18x zoom into a slim body rather than a DSLR-shaped bridge camera was the WB700's main selling point, trading a grip and viewfinder for pocketability. Manual focus is available, unusual for a camera in this class.
On the used market the WB700 sells as a budget travel-zoom option. Check the extending lens barrel for wobble or grinding, confirm the zoom motor moves smoothly through its full range, and test image stabilisation for wear.
