Samyang's fast manual wide-angle for APS-C — the 16mm f/2 for landscape and astrophotography.
The Samyang 16mm f/2 ED AS UMC CS is a fast manual focus wide-angle prime for APS-C cameras, providing a 24mm equivalent on Canon crop sensors. The f/2 aperture is very fast for a wide-angle lens, making it popular for astrophotography and low-light wide-angle shooting. Also sold under the Rokinon brand name in some markets.
Optical performance is good for the price. Sharpness is respectable from f/2 and very good by f/4. The ED element controls chromatic aberration. UMC (Ultra Multi-Coated) designation indicates quality coatings. Coma control is reasonable for astrophotography — stars stay fairly tight towards the corners. Barrel distortion is present but correctable in software.
Canon EF mount in this listing — also available in virtually every other mount. Filter thread is 77mm — larger than expected for the focal length. Weight is approximately 580 grams. Build quality is solid with a metal barrel. Manual focus only — no autofocus or electronic communication in most versions. The focus ring is smooth with good tactile feedback.
Very affordable on the used market. Check for smooth focus ring and clean front element. An excellent budget wide-angle for astrophotography on APS-C bodies. The f/2 speed at 24mm equivalent opens up night sky photography without the extreme cost of native AF alternatives. Also useful for real estate and interior photography.
