Samyang's compact fisheye for Sony APS-C — the tiny 8mm f/2.8 for creative wide-angle effects.
The Samyang 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye II is a compact diagonal fisheye for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras. At 8mm on APS-C, it produces a full diagonal fisheye effect filling the frame with approximately 180-degree corner-to-corner coverage. The compact design makes it one of the smallest fisheye lenses available, barely larger than a body cap.
As a fisheye, extreme barrel distortion is the creative intent. Sharpness is good across the frame for the type. The f/2.8 aperture is reasonably fast, enabling astrophotography and low-light creative work. UMC coatings reduce flare. The Version II improved coatings and optical performance over the original. Good coma control for night sky photography.
Sony E mount, APS-C. Filter thread is not available — the small front element protrudes. Weight is approximately 280 grams — very compact. Build quality is solid with a metal barrel. Manual focus only — no AF or electronic communication. The tiny size makes it an easy lens to carry for occasional creative fisheye shots.
Very affordable on the used market. Check for clean front element and smooth focus. An excellent compact fisheye for Sony APS-C shooters. The f/2.8 speed enables astrophotography and low-light creative work. Also useful for 360-degree panorama stitching. The compact size is the key practical advantage.
