Samyang's compact AF ultra-wide for Sony APS-C — sharp, lightweight, and excellent for vlogging.
The Samyang AF 12mm f/2 is an autofocus ultra-wide prime for Sony APS-C E-mount bodies, providing an 18mm full-frame equivalent perspective with f/2 maximum aperture. At 213g and 62mm filter thread it is lightweight for an f/2 APS-C ultra-wide. STM autofocus motor enables continuous tracking. Available in Sony E and Fujifilm X versions — the DB entry is the Sony E variant.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 10 groups. Seven rounded aperture blades. The 62mm filter thread is standard for APS-C compact ultra-wide primes. At 213g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.19m. STM autofocus motor. f/2 maximum aperture. APS-C image circle — will not cover a full-frame sensor without significant vignetting.
The f/2 at 12mm APS-C is primarily valued for astrophotography where maximum aperture is critical: the 18mm equivalent and f/2 aperture combination allows star-field exposures of approximately 7 seconds (NPF rule for APS-C) before star trails appear. For street photography in low ambient light, f/2 at 12mm provides a deep-focus snapshot perspective — at shooting distances over 1m, depth of field at f/2 on APS-C extends from near to infinity in many situations.
On the used market the Samyang AF 12mm f/2 is affordable for an autofocus APS-C ultra-wide prime. Condition checks: STM AF motor response, 62mm front element for marks, and aperture ring operation. Confirm the Sony E version is specified — a Fujifilm X version is also available. The Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary provides a zoom alternative at slightly wider maximum aperture. Compatible with Sony APS-C E-mount bodies.
