Sigma's D-series 105mm macro for Nikon — the screw-drive version of the popular EX macro.
The Sigma 105mm f/2.8D Macro is the Nikon F-mount screw-drive version of Sigma's well-regarded 105mm macro lens. The D designation indicates compatibility with Nikon's D-type AF coupling, requiring a body-mounted AF motor. It provides true 1:1 macro magnification with the working distance advantage of the 105mm focal length.
Optical performance is very good for macro work. Sharpness is excellent at close distances. At portrait range, the lens delivers good results with pleasant bokeh. The 105mm focal length provides comfortable working distance for macro subjects. An older design than the EX DG versions but optically capable. The f/2.8 aperture allows useful shallow DOF for portraits.
Nikon F mount with D-type screw-drive AF — requires a body with built-in AF motor. Will not autofocus on D3xxx/D5xxx series. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 451 grams. Build quality is solid. No image stabilisation. The screw-drive limitation restricts compatibility with entry-level Nikon bodies.
Very affordable on the used market. Check AF and manual focus operation. The screw-drive AF limitation means it only autofocuses on mid-range and pro Nikon bodies. A capable budget macro that doubles as a portrait lens. The HSM version with silent wave motor is preferred for broader body compatibility.
