Sigma's compact ultra-wide f/2.8 for mirrorless — Contemporary line at 16-28mm for Sony FE and L-Mount.
The Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary launched in 2022 as a compact, affordable ultra-wide zoom for mirrorless. The Contemporary designation prioritises portability — significantly smaller and lighter than the Art-line 14-24mm f/2.8 while maintaining good optics.
Optically very good — sharp across the frame with well-controlled distortion. The constant f/2.8 is useful for low light and astrophotography. The Contemporary line trades some optical perfection for dramatic size and weight savings. Stepping motor AF.
Available for Sony FE and L-Mount. 72mm filter thread — accepts standard screw-on filters, a major advantage over bulbous Art-line ultra-wides. Approximately 450g — dramatically lighter than the 14-24mm f/2.8 Art. Compact design.
Available used at mid-range prices. The filter thread capability and compact size are the standout features. The Art 14-24mm is sharper and wider but much larger with no filter thread. For travel and landscape photographers wanting f/2.8 ultra-wide with filter capability.
