Sigma's budget APS-C standard zoom with faster aperture and macro capability.
The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro is an early Sigma APS-C standard zoom offering a faster aperture than kit zooms with macro capability. Covering 27-112mm equivalent, it provides a step up from basic 18-55mm kit lenses with more reach and a wider maximum aperture.
Optical quality is decent with a noticeable improvement over basic kit zooms, particularly at the wide end where f/2.8 provides more light. The macro mode enables closer focusing. Build is solid plastic.
Available in Canon EF-S, Nikon F, Sony A, Pentax K, and Sigma SA mounts. Multiple updated versions exist including OS variants with stabilisation. The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary is the modern successor.
Very cheap used. Check AF motor and zoom ring. The later OS version with stabilisation is worth the premium. This original non-OS version is only justified at very low prices.
