Sigma's earlier 180mm macro for Nikon — the f/3.5D version with screw-drive AF.
The Sigma 180mm f/3.5D APO IF HSM Macro is an earlier version of Sigma's telephoto macro for Nikon F mount with D-type coupling and screw-drive AF capability. At 180mm, it provides outstanding working distance for macro photography. The APO elements ensure excellent chromatic correction. HSM provides quiet AF. The f/3.5 aperture is adequate for macro.
Optical performance is very good for macro work. The 180mm working distance is invaluable for photographing insects and wildlife macro subjects. APO elements control chromatic aberration well. Sharpness at macro distances is excellent. The IF design prevents barrel extension. The HSM motor provides faster, quieter AF than body-drive alternatives on Nikon.
Nikon F mount with D-type coupling. Filter thread is 72mm. Weight is approximately 980 grams — substantial. Build quality is solid. No image stabilisation. The HSM motor provides lens-based AF. The 180mm working distance remains the key practical advantage — approximately twice the working distance of standard 90-100mm macros.
Available at very low used prices — the later f/2.8 OS version and A-mount decline keep prices low. Check AF, focus ring, and clean optics. A capable telephoto macro at an attractive price. The 180mm working distance is the main reason to choose this over shorter macros. The OS-equipped successor is preferred if stabilisation matters.
