Sigma's older 24-70mm f/2.8 with macro — pre-Art DSLR standard zoom with HSM motor.
The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro is an earlier version of Sigma's constant f/2.8 standard zoom, predating both the non-Macro EX DG HSM and the Art line. It includes a macro mode providing close-up capability — a feature not common in this lens class.
Optical quality is acceptable — sharp in the centre at mid-apertures but with noticeable softness compared to first-party alternatives. The constant f/2.8 aperture is useful for events and low light. Macro mode provides approximately 1:2.7 magnification.
Available in Nikon F and other mounts. 82mm filter thread. Approximately 790g. No weather sealing. Full-frame coverage. EX designation — quality metal barrel construction. The macro mode adds versatility not found in most 24-70mm zooms.
Very cheap used. The macro mode is the distinguishing feature from later Sigma 24-70mm lenses. The Art-line 24-70mm is dramatically better optically. Only worth considering at very low prices where the macro mode adds appeal. Check for smooth zoom and focus action.
