Sigma's compact full-frame prime — the 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount.
The Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary was released in 2019 as the most compact full-frame prime in Sigma's mirrorless lineup. At 45mm f/2.8, it prioritises portability over speed — the I-series compact design creates one of the smallest full-frame AF primes. The 45mm is slightly wider than 50mm, providing a natural standard perspective.
Optical performance is very good for the compact design. Sharpness is excellent from f/2.8 — the moderate aperture means the lens is always near peak performance. The Contemporary I-series build quality is premium despite the compact size. Stepping motor AF is quiet. The 45mm perspective is favoured by some photographers as more natural than 50mm.
L-Mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 55mm — compact. Weight is approximately 215 grams — extraordinarily light for a full-frame AF prime. Build quality is premium I-series with metal barrel. No weather sealing. The aperture ring has a de-click switch for video. Also available in Sony E mount.
Available at moderate prices. Check AF and smooth aperture ring. An outstanding compact everyday prime — the 215-gram weight is remarkable. The f/2.8 limits DOF control but ensures consistent sharpness. Best for photographers who value compactness above speed. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art is the upgrade for those wanting shallow DOF.
